Economic Development Lethbridge (EDL) has announced the launch of the community-based Quantum Super Sub, located at Tecconnect on the north side.

Renae Barlow, VP of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at EDL, says the ground-breaking initiative positions Lethbridge at the forefront of quantum innovation, giving businesses, researchers and entrepreneurs access to cutting-edge hybrid quantum and supercomputing capabilities.

“This partnership isn’t just about technology—it’s about transformation,” says Barlow. “By anchoring Canada’s first Super Hub at Tecconnect, we’re giving local innovators the tools to solve global problems—from agri-tech to logistics—with computing power once thought to be years away.”

EDL explains that most computers today solve problems one step at a time. Quantum computers, however, explore many possibilities at once, making them useful for complex problems, such as:

- Finding the most efficient delivery route
- Scheduling staff in a way that cuts overtime
- Modeling risk in financial or climate systems
- Forecasting the direct and indirect impact of trade tariffs
- Synthesizing the best molecules for drugs and manufacturing applications

According to a news release from EDL, “Until now, using quantum technology required big budgets, high-level scientists, and access to labs. The Quantum Hub changes that. Businesses in Lethbridge can now try out this powerful technology—no PhD required.”

The Hub works in plain language. EDL says you can describe your business challenge, and the system will figure out the best computing tools to use, such as quantum, AI, or high-performance traditional computing.

They say several industries can take advantage of this technology, including:

Agriculture – modeling crop cycles, optimizing water use
Transportation & logistics – planning delivery or service routes
Manufacturing – optimizing scheduling or equipment use
Finance or insurance – modeling risk or improving security
Post-secondary or STEM education – offering hands-on exposure to emerging tech
To make this technology easier to understand and use, EDL and SuperQ will offer workshops, pilots, training, and educational programs.
